eBay on Orange

April 8, 2008

Orange has announced that it will provide an eBay application on its mobiles in the UK. This is the first such move by eBay into the mobile market- which is supposedly ‘set for big things’ in 2008. The application will make it easier for buyers and sellers to use eBay on the move. Future plans are thought to include notifications (possibly text messages) for ending bids and sales.

Sensitive data for sale on eBay

April 7, 2008

It has been reported that a Retired Sergeant (in America) has sold his official diaries documenting his police work on eBay. “From shootings to missing children, car chases that end in crashes followed by foot pursuits… you can read all about it” the former officer wrote in his description. Should this sensitive information have even got onto eBay?!

eBay to sell Skype?

April 4, 2008

There are rumours that eBay is planning on selling Skype which it purchased for $2.6bn in 2005. Since then eBay has tried and failed to integrate Skype into eBay and has recently been criticised for holding back Skype’s innovation. For those who don’t know, Skype is a VOIP application allowing voice communication over the Internet to other computers, mobiles and landlines. When the deal went through I assumed that Skype and eBay would be a perfect combination allowing buyers and sellers to communicate quickly and for free, however this does not seem to be the case.

eBay stops digital download auctions

April 3, 2008

Today eBay announced a new policy to stop the selling of eBooks, mp3s and software. This is, in my opinion, a good move by eBay who have been criticised in the past for allowing the sale of digital downloads. There have been instances of free software such as Paint.net being resold on eBay, clearly this is not right and the action taken by eBay should, hopefully, stop anything like this happening again. It will be interesting to see how legitimate amature authors, who sell their work on eBay, react to this.

eBay 5p Listing Day Tomorrow

April 2, 2008

There’s a 5p listing day tomorrow, this is a great time to put up unwanted gifts, toys and other junk lying around your house- but don’t forget you’ll still get charged a final value fee and possibly transaction fees from PayPal (if that’s how you choose to take payment). Check eBay’s page for more information.

Mystery Envelopes on eBay

April 2, 2008

Whilst browsing eBay I came across this mystery envelopes auction, the idea behind it is you purchase an envelope and it may or may not have something good inside it. From what I gather from the feedback the mystery gifts aren’t that valuable so it’s not quite like playing the lottery- but I guess the surprise idea is fun. No doubt there will be hundreds of clones soon!

Cheeto Chuck Norris

April 1, 2008

Another unusual item went up for sale on eBay today- a cheeto in the shape of actor/cult martial arts legend Chuck Norris. I really can’t see it, but maybe it’s more obvious in person! There is already 7 bids on the listing with 12hours to go. This is the latest in a growing trend of food-themed auctions with the Illinois shaped cornflake and cheesus, jesus shaped cheeto selling for over $1000. Remember to look at your crisps before you eat them, you never know it may be shaped like something and be worth some money!
