eBay AdChoice coming to the UK

July 16, 2008

eBay has announced a new advertising system ‘AdChoice’ for the UK. The new platform will be based the items that eBayers have been viewing and bidding on. The advertisements will appear on partner sites and is likely be opt-out, although this has not been explicitly stated. This is the latest in a growing trend of ‘relevant’ online advertising which is good for advertisers, but not so good for privacy. Another negative issue that has been raised is how it will affect eBay sales.

Existing eBayers wishing to opt-out must sign into eBay, go to the My eBay area and change the advertising preferences.

Perfumes banned from eBay France

July 16, 2008

eBay has failed in its appeal against a French court ruling disallowing the sale of perfumes by unauthorised dealers. The French court made the judgement last month which means that Givenchy, Kenzo, Christian Dior and Guerlain perfume brands may not be listed on the site without authorisation from the companies.

It must be noted this includes items that have been received as unwanted gifts! If eBay fails to implement the ban immediately it will be forced to pay 50,000 EUR per day.

Knives available to all on eBay

July 7, 2008

A national newspaper has published an article documenting the availability of knives on eBay. There has been a lot of publicity recently about knife crime due to several high-profile stabbings and murders in London and around the UK.

The newspaper claims to have found over “15,000 deadly weapons” which cost as little as 99p and some come with free postage. Surely it is time that eBay clamps down on the resale of knives and enforces its own policies.
